The Hilton is a great place for a family vacation. If you don't mind the prices and a huge resort (our family calls it the 'Hilton Walkalotta' you'll love the incredidible setting, activities, and magical setting. The restaurants can be a little spotty (the most dismal and pathetic teppanyaki performance I've ever seen!) and the food is nothing to write home about, but you don't go there for the food. Try a couple's massage by the sea as the sun sets--bliss!

The pool is beautiful and includes a waterslide. The beach is easily accessible along with many water sports, glass-bottom boat ride, sailing trips and plenty of snorkeling. This hotel was recently renovated from an Outrigger to the Marriott. Some guests were provided a Hawaiian lei (necklace of flowers) upon check-in; a number of us did not receive this. There is no evening turn-down service in your bedroom. When checking into the Marriott, you are notified of a Resort Fee. This is above and beyond what you pay to Expedia.com. This is a daily charge that each day provides 2 drinks per room, 1/2 day snorkel rental and a couple other little things. It was a surprise to me, but was a nice way to mingle with other travelers while getting your beverages at the bar area. There's a nice brunch for between $25-$30 at the Marriott. They have made-to-order omelets, fresh made waffles, sticky buns, eggs Benedict, fresh orange juice, pastries, etc. There's also a fabulous Ahi Tuna Sandwich available for lunch that was very fresh and well-prepared. The sunshine in Hawaii (I was there in Aug/Sept) is incredibly powerful. Wearing SPF 50, my friend and I both burned over the noon hour; be careful! At this Marriott pool, there is limited shade. Get to the pool by 9 a.m. if you want that shade. This is a fabulous location to watch the sunset go down. The beach faces the west where you can watch the sun tuck behind the ocean with it's last green flash before it turns to dusk.

We just got back from our third trip to the Fairmont Orchid and I must say it's still our favorite hotel on the Big Island. We've been return visitors for the last couple of years and will continue to come back, it's a very clean and beautiful resort that provides a very relaxing vacation. We took our 2 year old along too and he loves the beach and sand bottom hot tub/pool. If you go, be sure to get the breakfast buffet package included.

We stayed here four nights in February '06 and plan to come back for a longer stay next year. Like Hawaii in general, the Hapuna Prince is a bit pricey but ultimately worth it. Staff is incredibly courteous, layout does require a lot of walking as other reviewers have pointed out, but there are incredible views to be had from almost anywhere within the resort. We recommend having someone show you to your room at check in -- the vastness of the resort can be daunting until you get used to it. We were upgraded to "full ocean view," so that was a bonus. But you don't need to pay extra for a view if you don't want to, there are plenty of other places to watch the sunset, like the poolside bar, Reef Lounge, anywhere really. Pool is only four feet deep. Beach is unbelievably close (and beautiful). Lounge chairs and umbrellas are set up for guests daily. Reservations are key at any of the restaurants (food will not disappoint, though it's a tad overpriced). In-house shops are convenient, Club House facilities are top-notch. I had a message that worked wonders on my sore neck. Definitely hit Costco (minutes south of the airport) when you land for water, beer, snacks, even clothing.

A classy and picturesque resort. The crescent beach here is fantastic: beautiful, secluded, and clean. There are coral reefs at either end that are great for casual snorkeling, while the majority of the beach is an unbroken stretch of soft, clean sand. Our room was recently renovated, but in the bathroom some of the renovations were already showing wear. Service is generally, but not universally, friendly. Food prices at the resort are very high, but this is to be expected in Hawai'i at a beautiful resort.

My husband and I very much enjoyed our six-day stay at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows in February. The property was beautiful and well maintained, with open, airy lobby and atrium. Grounds surrounding the resort were manicured and blended in well with the ecology. Our ocean front room on the 4th floor had a wonderful view of the beach and the bay from both inside the room and the lanai, where we saw migrating whales in the distance several times. There was a small fridge (empty) in our room for us to store snacks and other drinks besides the complimentary bottle water provided by the resort, which was a plus. Twice a day, our room was meticulously cleaned and made up. The resort also lived up to its eco-friednly label by having recycling bin in our room to promote recycling. Everyone working at the resort was very friendly and very service oriented. We particularly loved our wait person at the bountiful breakfast buffet, who remembered our name and made us felt "at home". Managers of various on-site restaurants stopped by while we dined to ensure that we were happy with the services and the food. We also received wonderful assistance from the concierage to plan and book our excurions and dinners outside of the resort. Overall, we were extremely happy with our choice for our first trip to the Big Island and will definitely stay again at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows when we return.
