Selected this hotel based on reported quality, location and value at a promotional rate. Hotel was as expected; clean, comfortable, nice view and close access to downtown sights (particularly close to pickups for tours and boats). It is not a 5-star resort but a solid 4-star option. Only drawbacks we had were inoperable ice machine and lacking tolietries. I would note everything beyond the room is an extra charge and very expensive, including parking, on-site dining, fitness center and pool. Had a great Labor Day vacation stay by avoiding these.

It's nice to find a hotel that feels like home and that's what the James Hotel delivers. You can actually hang out in the lobby or adjacent "library" and get work done (computers provided including MAC), read great design and art books, or just relax. The gym has the best equipment I have ever experienced short of a top-end spa resort. The room has nice contemporary design, comfy linens and bed, plasma screen, great bath and work cubby. You can hook up your MP3 to the room's stereo system. Hotel Bar is fun and well stocked with exceptional brands and food from next door (try the Kobe beef served on Himalayan salt block). Restaurant has great steaks (recommend salt-aged rib eye and lollipop cheesecake). Location steps away from Michigan Avenue shopping.
