After going to Sandals in St. Lucia for my honeymoon in 2008, this vacation package @ approximately 1/3rd of the price seemed like a great deal, and i figured it would be about 1/3rd as nice. However, after arriving at the resort i realized that this was not true and that resort is a GREAT deal!!! It seems like this resort has the best location in the playa dorada complex. All of the staff at the resort are AWESOME and VERY entertaining (i still can remember what one of their laughs sounded like, hilarious!). The nightly entertainment was great, they had gambling, a beach party, fire entertainers, local dancers, local musicians, and it was all AWESOME! Our room was right on the beach (make sure you pay the extra for the oceanfront room, it is WELL worth it, and make sure that you demand upon arrival that you get an ocean front room in section 14 or 16). The only thing that bothered some people (although i'm not easily annoyed) were all the locals on saturday and sunday, made the pool very busy and the eating situation very busy, but other than this everything was GREAT!!! We did a katamaran excursion and the city tour with the cable car and our guide was AWESOME for both of them, so i would def. recommend these! Overall, this is not sandals mainly because the food wasn't as good, but it was SO much cheaper and almost as good, i would def. recommend going here! Hope this helps!

A very nice small resort with some of the ammenities of a larger resort. A quiet place, nice pool area, right on a small beach and next to a larger beach which Casa Marina/Reef hotel is on-great waves! We just had the buffet breakfast which was good. They changed it up a little each day.The staff were very friendly and helpful. It's an easy, fun walk into town to the many bars, restaurants and shops. The only negatives I came up with was the lack of dressers in the rooms, the need for some type of drying racks for wet clothes/swim suits and the rooms weren't very soundproof-tough sleeping in late!

After a Groupon deal on another Puerto Plata resort fell through (Viva Wyndham Tangerine unexpectedly wanted to charge double for a stay during Christmas week), we settled upon Riu Merengue for our Christmas on the Beach. Everything happens for a reason -- Riu Merengue was one of the most beautiful resorts we've ever seen, set in an undisturbed tropical paradise. The best part is that it is the only resort around, about a half hour in the opposite direction from the airport as all the other resorts in Puerto Plata (Riu is set west of the city, whereas the others are in the east in crowded Cabarete and Sosua). Venture out into the water on a boat or kayak and the resort disappears amongst the palm trees: The tallest buildings are the two-floor villas in which the rooms are set, eight rooms to a building, which gives it a more intimate, village-style feel than other resorts. The rooms were adequate, but we didn't spend much time in them (the full-bottle mini bar was an added plus though). I highly recommend an upgrade to an ocean-view room, which was a negligible extra fee. Our room had its own private patio just steps from the beach -- sizable enough for ten people, although we were three -- where we often sat to watch the ocean, the birds and the people go by (we even had our own banana tree). As for amenities: The food was fairly average resort fare, although there were more choices than in other resorts we've stayed in. I was disappointed at the "restaurants," which were merely smaller buffets in different parts of the resort offering somewhat different food than the main, giant buffet. Actual restaurants would have been nice. The bars were great, and the drinks were not weak if you knew what to ask for, plus the bar staff were full of energy and kept the nights moving. The entertainment was really first-class, with nightly shows on a full-size stage featuring upwards of two-dozen talented dancers -- everyone loved it, and the shows were packed every night. The pool seemed small for such a large resort, but because Merengue is connected to the two other Riu resorts, you had access to others (Merengue was clearly the best of the three resorts however). We did the four-wheeler rental/tour, which was the highlight of the trip: We went up through the surrounding mountains, past tiny local villages until reaching the top of a mountain overlooking the beautiful ocean to the front and the sprawling jungle to the rear. It was the most picturesque view I've ever seen, and the whole thing was well worth the extra price. The SCUBA diving, however, was a huge disappointment. The instruction for first-timers consisted of a 20-minute DVD, 10 minutes of practice in one of the pools (with resort guests swimming around) and, although we were promised 45 minutes underwater, we ended up being under for only 18 minutes. But all this took about 4-5 hours, due to waiting around for instructors (a German instructor made us wait 30 minutes in full wetsuit gear plus tanks and weight belts before going to the boat while he smoked cigarettes) and travel time to the dive spot, which is 30 minutes away. We saw just three fish and the water was not very pretty in this location. As for the beach and ocean itself, in low tide the ocean floor was very rocky, and it hurt to walk any further out than 10 feet or so. But in high tide it mysteriously became sandy and was a much more pleasant experience. It's not the prettiest beach or water ever (Cancun has Puerto Plata beat in this regard), but it was nicer, cleaner and warmer than any beach in the US. It is worth nothing that we were told by locals that jellyfish are rare in these waters but common in Punta Cana, and we didn't see any sea "creatures" while swimming/wading off the beach, which was a big plus for squeamish people like me. Check in and check out was fast and efficient, and not a single complaint overall. I would definitely recommend this resort to everyone and would stay here again if I return to

I just returned from visiting Puerta Plata. My mom and I needed a vacation and decided to stay at the Iberostar Costa Dorado resort. It's a great place to stay especially for families. We left the resort only once to go on a day trip, the City Tour. It was a great way to see the surrounding area, go on the cable car, and visit some cool sites like the Rum factory ;-). I would definitely stay at this resort again with my family.

This was an amazing experience staying at the Casa Marina Resort. The ambiance at this resort is just beyond what was expected from me. There were only a couple of downfalls. One was the condition and comfort of the room. The beds could have been a little more comfortable and the furniture in general could have been a little more up to date, but for the price we paid and the fact that we barely stayed in our room, I am not at all complaining. The buffet meals were not that great, but the restaurant meals made up for it. The seafood restaurant was absolutely amazing. Everything tasted fresh! The Italian restaurant was also great. The people that work at this resort were absolutely great! They were upbeat, helpful, excited, and just full of energy! At any given moment they found something to do to have fun with the resort guests. The bartenders were always dancing and smiling, especially our friend Leonardo! He had a smile on 24/7, as did all the employees of this resort. The Casa Marina employees really made the whole experience at the resort a memorable one! We definitely plan on returning to this resort. The resort is just beautiful and very big! There were a lot of activities that were available on the resort. The nightclub was a great experience on Friday and Saturday night. So many people showed up and danced and had fun, including Dominican locals! Yes, there were Dominican locals that stayed at the resort for the weekend! Overall, an awesome time and very recommended!

This resort is beautiful and well maintained. I was very disappointed with the food. I have never been to a resort before where you would actually have to search for something to eat that would taste good. Usually is the other way around, you're supposed to be overwhelmed with good choices when you're in a resort. At least, that's been my experience so far. But the food in this resort is just bad all around. The juices are watery and taste like plain tap water with a bit of color and and some sugar - real nasty!. We were unable to make reservations for any of the restaurant for dinner. They were always overbooked (all of them - it was insane!) so we were stuck with the bad food at the buffet :( - I would not recommend this place unless they do something about the food....The worst food I have tasted in a resort and I have been to many prior to this one....Thumbs down for me.

The resort was great! Food was great! Staff was very friendly and courtious. Activities were low. You couldn't enjoy time at the beach without beach peddlers trying to sell you something every 5 min. You couldn't take a morning jog without a horse driven taxi/wagon disturbing you every 5 min. You couldn't go to the local plaza without street peddlers disturbing you every 2 min. As a matter of fact, you couldn't leave the resort and not expect to be harassed by a peddler. aside from that, everything Inside the resort was great! I would return, but not venture out of the resort.

I have been to Mexico twice and now wanted to try another location. Bahia was cheap and looked nice. We were very impressed with the resort. Great buffets, snack bars, and restaurants. Pools were nice and all the people were very friendly. Workers would do anything to make you happy and to make your experience enjoyable. Only downfall was the resort was an hour away from airport suggestion to pay extra for the shuttle to and from the airport. Paid $90 each way for a taxi. Loved the night entertainment and during the day they always had activities. Other downfall not a lot of shopping around the resort. Otherwise we loved it and would go back again.

My family and I stayed at the resort from Friday, Jan 15 to Monday, Jan 18. The grounds of the resort are very nice and well maintained. The beach and pool had plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas. Our rooms were clean and housekeeping did a good job of cleaning our rooms every day. One night it rained and when I called the front desk for an umbrella, they said that all rooms had an umbrella in the closet. We didn't have one, so when we asked if we could get one sent up, they said no. I thought this was pretty rude since it clearly wasn't our fault that the room didn't have an umbrella. The food was pretty horrendous at all restaurants and we tried all of them except for the pasta restaurant. The quality of food was poor and we all ended up getting stomach issues (diarrhea) from it for 1 to 2 days. It was definitely from the resort's restaurants because we didn't eat anywhere else. From the bad food alone, I would not recommend this resort to anyone. To me, being able to enjoy good food while on vacation is very important and I wasn't able to do that on this trip. I'm sure other resorts in the area have better food AND you won't get sick from it.

This hotel for the money was good. Staff was great! Food was, okay. For example if lunch starts at 2 and you don't get there at 2 they don't make more food. So if you were to get there at 3:30 theres little, if not any food left for you to eat. Also they tell you about another resturant down by they water that serves almost at all times, which didn't seem so to us. I would say that 85% of the time the chef wasn't there so no food was available. They also have "alternative attractions" such as a gym/night club etc that they didn't tell us about and we didn't realize until the last few days! They also had different shows for entertainment that seemed like no one knew about. I would say the bar is the best part about this resort, they don't seem to skimp on the liquor at all. This resort has potential, but it takes some big changes.

I went for a 7 night stay at this resort with my 4yo daughter. I was looking forward to enjoying most of the time with her and having her enjoy the kids club as well when she got bored of the beach and the pool. Be forewarned, the staff who run the Kid's Club aren't really interested in doing anything with the kids. Several times my daughter went over, stayed for an activity, and I found her unsupervised shortly thereafter. I was surprised about this because there is a policy clearly stating that once you sign forms and your child stays, the hotel is responsible. I complained to the manager, but still was sure to supervise my daughter when she chose to go to the club. For an entire day there was a sign posted that the staff were with kids playing by the pool, which was not true, it was because the staff did not want to take responsibility for doing anything with the kids that day and were found joking around with co-workers by the pool. If you are hoping that your kids might enjoy some of the resort and you are hoping to use the Kid's Club, don't choose this resort. The resort itself is great. Amazing location. Only complaints is that the rooms are way out-dated. I had to switch rooms twice because the first room I was given had no balcony and the second had A/C that was not functioning. The food was great at the buffet. You will get harassed on the beach by people selling things, they unfortunately do not stop after you tell them once. Overall great hotel for the value, but not if you are going with kids.

I had a great time at this hotel, I was so sad to leave. It was so relaxing. The beach is just beautiful. There are 3 or 4 bars around the resort including one in the pool. THe food was great. Im not sure why people complaining on the reviews. We went to 2 out of the 3 resturants and loved it! One of our fav part of the resort were the shows every night. THe animation crew were so funny and really brought energy to us. If you like clubing there is one next to resort, 2 min walking. No charge to enter. I do suggust making plans to do things outside of the resort too. There is so much to see and do out there take advantage! I love the people in the Dominican Republic, they are so full of energy and laughter. Everyone in the neighborhood is happy even the poor areas, it really makes you think twice bout things we complain about everyday basis. I speak spanish so i had no problem speaking to the workers but they do speak english as well. For those who complain about that it makes me laugh because you are in a spanish speaking country. They are not going to hire americans there. I think some people complain too much. Relax! and don't be too picky its your vacation. I had fun and would love to go back!

Check in was great and the service was excellent. The resort had a variety of food served on different nights. However, I am used to eating burgers and fries. So don't ask me how the food was. Because I thought most of it was just ok and nothing exceptional about it. There are many different resorts close by to visit. My girlfriend went to the spa and absolutely loved it. I proposed to my girlfriend on the beach of their sister resort. It was around midnight and we had the entire beach to ourselves. The sky was beautiful and the stars were awesome. It might have just been because of the occasion but it was great. I would return to the resort in the future. If you want to have a weekend of relaxation you will love it.

I travel alot and have been to some really nice resorts, so you have to look at my reviews as a person who,s seen alot in my travels. If your looking for a cheap getaway for some fun IN the sun this resort is not bad, its a three for one resort which makes it attractive.3 different resorts in one. What i like about resort, was that it was cheap ,get to enjoy nice size pool and beach. What I didn,t like about resort was the food was "so so" and same food everyday ,compared to other resorts I didn,t really like the food. I like to eat ,so having good food on menu is important to me. Drinks were watered down to the point were it taste like water. Tip, I always bring bottles of liquor in my checked bags, put them between your clothes. You have to travel a ways to get to anything out side of resort. On a scale of 1 to 10 i will give this resort a 6 . If your just looking for a cheap trip to sit in sun relax with your lady then this resort is not bad.If your used to having everything, good food ,wifi in room cable with american channels, like, espn, sports and movie channels for when you want to relax in the room and have a drink thats not watered down , then you might want to look around at other resorts.

Overall, this is a very solid 4-star resort which would be very appealing to those wishing to enjoy an adults only experience. The resort is well maintained and cleaned, although the rooms are a little run-down. Lobby area is very nice, although I found the staff at the front desk to be the least friendly in the whole resort. Food is plentiful and good quality at buffet and a la cartes. I really enjoyed the Asian and Seafood restaurants, found the grill lacking in quality and service. The buffet has decent selection though a little repetitive. The Egg Man and Nilson are superstars for breakfast. Drinks were well made, and better quality rum was available if you asked. Service at the theatre bar was definitely the best, the swimup bar was a little hit and miss depending how much the guy enjoyed his job on a particular day. Entertainment staff were good and not overbearing, though at times there was less going on than I would have hoped. Pools are clean and warm, beach is pretty good for Puerto Plata and the staff on the whole were very welcoming and helpful. The "yellow shirts" are not a problem if you're polite but firm. Overall, if you want a smallish resort without children where you can really get to know the others at the resort but still have a small level of luxury, this is a great place for you. I would definitely consider returning, especially if the prices stay reasonable.

The resort is very big Crown Suites, Crown Villas, Presidential Suites... each one has a reception but there is a shuttle you can take between them. There was just too much hasstle with this resort, it says All inclusive but its not. Safe is extra, internet is extra , some food at restaurants is extra. This resort has a VIP section reserved for members only and they get the best service. The rest of us cant get into the good areas (restaurants, beaches, entertainment...etc) They have people walking around constantly asking to give you VIP tours, which are really time share presentations to get you to buy stuff. Food was ok there is veriety for everyone, pasta was the best. You have to make reservations for the restaurants sometimes days ahead or they run out but buffet is open all the time. They also run out of towels early in the day. Daily entertainment wasnt great, they have pool dances, and amphitheatre shows but they are not that great. Night club opens at 11PM and it was always empty. So if you are not VIP you might get bored at night. Its not a bad resort its just hard to relax when you have to worry about all this stuff. To me thats not what all inclusive should be like.

The resort is about 30 years old and needs some renovations (which according to the owner will soon be done). It's not really a 4-star resort anymore which even is confirmed by the owner. But the price-earnings ratio is thanks to the amazing low price absolutely correct. Due to low occupancy everything was a little sized down incl. the restaurant. Food was ok. The location is somehow isolated, Luperon has nothing beside the nice marina, and it takes one hour to drive to Puerto Plata. All in all a pleasant stay and worth the money.

the resort was beautiful, the pool, hot tub, food, and staff were great. great variety in choices of activities, and food to eat. lots of chairs and seating to relax during the day and night. the animation staff were very interactive, and always up to getting you involved in the different activities. the shows at night were great as well.even had family/children activities as well. Down side: We went with a total of 14 people to this resort. there were some basic issues with the rooms: we had no drawer in our bathroom and the toilet paper holder was broken. another 2 rooms we had friends staying in had leaks in from their ceiling, another persons A/C didnt work. But staff switched their room for them. another issue we came acrossed was common miscommunication. my boyfriend and i scheduled to have dinner at one of the restaurants at the resort. we were told by one guest service person that we couldnt make the reservation for the same night it had to be for the next night (even though some one else in our group made reservations for the same night) they told us to come back to get signed up. we came back and clarified with her that we wanted reservations for the following night. when we got there, there was no reservation down. she had written it down for the night before, even though we were told we couldnt do that, and that we even clarified with her for it to be the next night. this type of issue occured several times. but overall the experience was great.
