My husband and I enjoyed 4 days at Matachica. It is a beautiful resort, secluded and has an extremely good restaurant. The grilled snapper at lunch was our favourite. Would definitely recommend people consider staying here. However, if you are going in the low season you need to consider: - hotel is accessible by boat only and the boat only goes when guests are arriving or departing. In low season this can be very infrequent, resulting in you be stuck in the resort or be willing to pay about USD 40 for a trip into town with the taxis. Though some locals told us (the hotel didn't), you can apparently buy a weeks pass - other resorts nearby are also closed, so you cannot just go walking into any other very easily for a change in restaurants/bars - the hotel likes to use there recommended tour providers, which I have to say are good, however if you want to do the Blue Hole day trip difficulties can arise due to lack of numbers going, so request from the start you want to go with any provider if you are really keen. I didn't realise till it was too late and missed out. - lastly, the front desk, bar and restaurant close very early in the offseason - 9pm on a Saturday night! Don't think of going off for an evening stroll before a night cap as you won't get it. The front desk being closed also means last minute cancellations of trips messages don't reach you and you might be on the pier at 5.15am waiting for your pick-up. The first staff member arrived at 6am.

I stayed here 12/27-31. It is a new condo resort across the lagoon from San Pedro and is not beachfront/oceanfront, although they do have two sand/beach areas along the lagoon. The pool is nice but there is no snack or bar service. The rooms are spacious and very nice (granite counters, comfortable beds, good linens, fully supplied kitchen, etc.) The resort is very secluded from town because of it's location across the lagoon. They have a private boat to take you back and forth which runs about every 1.5 hours (first boat at 8:30 and last at around 10.) I went diving early and one of the chefs took me over at 5:30PM which was very nice. I made arrangements to stay in town late one evening and was promised to have a boat pick me up at 11PM. No one was there so I had to call over to the restaurant and ask the chef to pick me up (which he graciously did). Staff try to be helpful but aren't always around (front desk was closed by 8PM). The restaurant (Indian) is very good (note: there is no room service.) Each condo has a TV but no phone or alarm clock. I used my cell phone to wake me up and they provide a wake up service. The grocery store is 4 blocks from the dock in San Pedro but they really should offer a grocery service. The property runs 100% on generators and they are noisy (not bad if you keep your doors and windows closed but loud if you open them). We lost power every day in the evening.

Sueno del Mar is a gorgeous resort in a nice quiet location on the northern tip of Ambergris Caye. The staff at this resort make this place amazing. They are so friendly and helpful with all your needs ... we didn't have to worry about a thing.Really can't say enough about them, they were perfect. We were only booked in for two nights, but were waiting for our luggage to arrive from the airlines, and were happy to stay another night here. The rooms are huge (more like a condo all to yourself) with full kitchen,and large living space, bedroom and bathroom. Even though it is a little ways from San Pedro (about a half hour boat ride) the staff was willing to take us into town pretty much whenever we wanted. Also, it is very close to the reef, so you can actually just take kayaks out and paddle to the reef to snorkel. It wouldn't be so easy in San Pedro. If you are looking for a quiet getaway and can afford it, we highly recommend Sueno. (tip: even though the restaurant had excellent food and you should definetely try it out, if you are looking to save money, buy groceries and booze in town, and set up in your room, it has everything you need.) We loved Sueno del Mar and we would not hesitate to stay here again.
