We recently stayed a week in the Maho Sonesta. It is a well maintained beautiful resort. We only ate at the beachfront restaurant one time as there are so many local places to eat. On this occasion the food and service was excellent. We did sample the bars at various times and found the service to be prompt. The beach and views are great and we enjoyed watching the planes take off and land at the nearby airport. The planes cease around 9 at night. Would stay at the Sonesta again in a heartbeat.

We've been to St. Maarten many times and this was our first stay at the Sapphire. It is essentially a timeshare resort/hotel, not a luxury establishment. However, for independent travelers who are familiar with the island, it is an excellent value. We didn't need to consult with the hotel staff much, but when we did, they were very helpful and friendly. The daily housekeeping service was excellent. The beach is small and does come and go depending on the weather and it is not really child-safe. That said, it is a wonderful amenity available right on the property and we spent at least 5 days of our 14 on the island at our home resort. Mullet Bay is less than a 5 minute drive away and is one of our favorite beaches. Longue Baie, Plum Bay and Baie Rouge are also nearby and they are all lovely as well. The only downside of the Sapphire was a very poor gym with limited equipment, some of which did not work. If you can get your exercise by swimming in the beautiful Caribbean, then this should not preclude you from staying in this hotel.

We started the hotel search fairly late--4 weeks before we were going to St. Martin. We were looking for something larger than a typical hotel room for a middle aged couple with 2-20 something children. What we found was a great condo in a time share resort with all amenities at a reasonable price. 2 bedrooms with 2 baths and 2 balconies overlooking the bay and the lagoon as well as a large living room with a pullout couch. Beach was on premises--a luxury in Simpson Bay along with a beach bar. Umbrellas/Chairs etc. were included with the resort. Good restaurants were close by and the staff of the hotel was friendly and the place was very clean. Parking could be a challenge in the busy season and walking to the main street was a bit difficult with no sidewalks and a busy road--a construction is next door but it did not have an effect on us. I would stay here again.
