My husband and I took a much needed vacation to Caneel Bay in July 2012. This was our second trip to St. John and our first to Caneel. We will return to Caneel again. I would call Caneel rustic luxury. It is located within Virgin Islands National Park with gorgeous views from nearly everywhere. It includes: 7 beaches; hiking trails; kayaks, sailboats, rafts, snorkeling equip. (all inc. in the room price). This is a place for people who love the great outdoors, but wish to have the amenities of a nice hotel. Caneel balances this wonderfully. The rooms are unobtrusive and disbursed throughout the large resort. It is done so well, that you don't need to spend time with other guests unless you wish to. Since we spend little time in our room on vacation, we choose a less expensive room in the "garden view" area. It was a two minute walk to the beach and offered beautiful mountain vistas right outside our door. There are many donkeys and deer roaming the property as well as beautiful reefs, tropical fish and sea turtles in the bays. Hiking through the jungle was majestic. There are 3 restaurants which were only okay, however, the breakfast buffet (w/ tons of fruit, eggs benedict & belgian waffles made to order, etc.) was superb. They have bed & breakfast packages available which was what we had. I am glad that we didn't spring for any of meal plans though. There are plenty of good dining options for all budgets in town. Taxi's to Cruz Bay are readily available for $5 per person. ZoZo's (at Gallows Point) was our favorite restaurant in Cruz Bay. Caneel has a courtesy office at the St. Thomas airport where they collect your luggage, provide you w/ taxi service and ferry rides on their private ferry. Having visited other places in St. John in the past, this was wonderfully convenient by comparison. There is a $110 fee for transportation that took me aback at first, however, the convenience it provided made it well worth the cost. Besides, you can catch it to St. Thomas for shopping excursions during your stay. My only problem is that I wish I could have stayed longer.

They were unable to give us the room that we requested for one out of the three nights of our reservation. They just didn't say sorry, so sad, too bad. They actually credited us for that one night. I couldn't believe it. Imagine that. A resort with integrity!!! It is only rated with 3 stars, but it is a 5 star resort to us. Very accommodating and clean, which is important to me. We read that we should ask for unit 1,2,3; upper level units, the gold rooms. They were beautiful! Also close to town. Don't need a car to get around.

This new resort has terrific rooms with great views of the water and the boats in the bay. Cruz Bay is the area to stay in St. John. The location for Grande Bay Resort is ideal! We walked to every dinner except one. All were within a 5 minute walk....Morgan's Mango, Rhumb Lines, Castaways, ZoZo's, Cactus on the Blue. Asolare was the only dinner we drove to. The beaches are a quick, easy drive. Ten minutes to Hawksnest, 15 minutes to Trunk Bay, 20 minutes to Maho Bay and Francis Bay. The staff at Grande Bay is incredibly friendly and very helpful. It's a small enough resort that you deal with the same 6-8 people for everything. Their service simply blows away the service we have (or haven't) received at many other resorts throughout the Caribbean. We wil return to St. John and we will certainly stay at Grande Bay Resort.
