My wife and I went there for our honeymoon. We stayed in the Pelecan wing in one of their ocean front rooms on the first floor. The room was wonderfull. The ocean side was almost all glass. It had a slidding glass door onto the pattio where we spent each night after dinner enjoying a night cap. There was allways plenty to eat (I highly recommend the chicken sandwich at the beach grill) and plenty to do. Sometimes I wish I took more advantage of the activities. We spent most of the time sitting on the beach reading; doing nothing. I never had issues with the cleanliness of our room or the resort as a hole. The staff was friendly and willing to help out however they can. Security is all over the resort all day and I fealt completely safe there. On the down side: The food was a little repetative. This resort is a 3 star resort but bareley. The free water toys (surf boards, kyacks, paddels, snorkeling equipment, etc.) work but are definitely not in the best of shape. The beds are rather basic and very firm. The whell in the middle of our king bed was bent and we kept having to adjust it after a nights sleep. The sheets and towels needed a little softener. Having said all that I would go back. But this time after I have a kid that reaches the age between 8 and 13.

We liked our stay at the Avila resort hotel. The room was comfortable and spacious. There were two pleasant beaches that were ok. The restaurants, however, were so-so, and the lovely schooner bar served the weakest drinks I have ever encountered. Our Pina Coladas were indistinguishable from soda pop and the Mojitos had no detectable alcohol. Next time, we will bring or own drinks. Although the hotel is within walking distance of town (it is not all the convenient on a very hot day). Weirdly, the much advertised shuttle service goes to town only twice a day--once at 9:00 and once at 3:00. So my wife and I would finish breakfast on our holiday breakfast around 9:30-10:00 and had either to hire a taxi or walk. It should leave more frequently. And the morning shuttle is inappropriately early for vacationers who come, partly, to rest. Two excellent restaurants within walking distance, Rozendaels and Fishelisious (sp) made up easily for the characterless food at the resort. We will definitely stay there again. We loved our visit the island and we enjoyed the comfort of our room. Reading on the beach with an occasional wade-in was a treat. But, given the care for so many things, we were irked by its short-comings.

When we first pulled up to the hotel I was quite concerned.......looked a bit run down and old, but as we entered the lobby it was actually very nice. It appears to be an older hotel but the rooms are updated and they are constantly working on the outside and commom areas. The bathroom in our room was pretty small, but I did see larger bathrooms in other rooms...we had a resort view.....I think the oceanview rooms are a bit larger. No real complaints......the resort was lovely and my family had a great time. The staff was amazing......very friendly and accomadating and willing to help out! We did travel with kids and it was a very kid friendly resort!

Overall I give the resort an A++++. To begin with, I was blown away by the beauty of the lobby...it had a dramatic openess that led to the beautiful pool and beach that will stay in my mind for a long time! The resort's location was convenient; it was in a quiet area outside of town yet only a ten minute cab ride to Willemsted. The beach area was just beautiful. The services and restaurant choices were all excellent. I also found the staff friendly and very helpful. My only criticism is that the rooms, however spacious and clean, could use some updating (replace carpeting with tile, update bathrooms, and room furniture).

Booked this hotel for honeymoon since both of us wanted more local experience than beach resort experience. Would reccommend if you want local setting. Would not stay there though; rather try somewhere else. The good: Hotel is located at safe location very accessible to excitement of downtown. We experienced both local flavors and tourist flavors. Hotel has sister location that is a beach resort and provides free shuttle service to the sister location. It also provides free shuttle to a local beach. Food at hotel was good except for the breakfast (see below in the bads). The bad: Staff at this hotel were not very friendly; there were very few "hello or how are you" so we wondered why. Turns out that hotel adds a 12% service charge to every bill but this service charge is then split between hotel and staff. Therefore, staff wasn't getting full pay for their service. You would have to add extra gratuity that would only go to the staff. Breakfast started out good during the first day there. But later, we saw that hotel never got fresh food. Tomatoes and cucumbers were all spoiled towards end of week. The ugly: Do not waste your money on the spa!!!
