Overall I enjoyed my stay here. One big problem I had is the fact they said it was too windy to rent an umbrella. Traveling with 2 small children, with very fair skin shade was very important to me. I have never stayed at a beach resort that said it was too windy! It's the beach of course it's windy! Check-in was extremely slow, considering it's high season I felt they should have had more employees. Food was very good. Beachside grill was great! They make excellent adult beverages as well.

Our stay 8/19-20/2011: This hotel could be so great! In fact, many aspects of our stay were stellar. The room was clean and fresh. The service by the beach attendants (chairs/umbrellas/towels) was friendly and courteous, as were the waitstaff at the restaurant and poolside dining area. The landscaping was tasteful and well maintained, and the beach was beautiful. We appreciated being able to continue to use the guest facilities through the afternoon after checking out. However, there is a lot of room for improvement. Here is where our experience at the resort fell below reasonable expectations: 1) Decor - the hallway was long, undecorated, glossy white painted, bare floored, and devoid of any artwork. Reminded us of developing world hotels we have stayed in! Also echoed noise. 2) the Bar - we arrived at 9:45 or so on a Friday night. Went to the bar for a cocktail. Pina colada not an option - frozen drinks are apparently only served at the pool bar, which was closed. Mojito - nope, no mint. Dark and stormy - no again. Seemed odd at a beach resort - I realize it's not the islands, but there are palm trees! 3) breakfast - we weren't informed at check-in that there was a complimentary breakfast until 9:30. At 9:34 we arrived at the dining room, to be told the breakfast buffet was now closed. The warming dishes were still on the buffet, but, okay, no problem. We'll order $15 breakfasts from the menu. Mmm - "belgian waffle with strawberries and whipped cream, served with warm maple syrup". 45 minutes later, our meals arrived. The warm maple syrup turned out to be two little plastic containers of "pancake syrup". Pointing out to the waitress this isn't warm maple syrup, we're told "That is maple syrup - that's the way it comes." The grapefruit juice she poured at the table had turned - she readily replaced it with orange juice. No espresso or cappuccino - they don't have a machine. 4) The manager - we asked to speak to her to discuss the above. She was not at her desk. We gave our cell phone. She called while we were on the harbor cruise. We called back and left another message. We never heard from her again.

picked a week in late August to stay at the Shell Island resort, as did hurricane Irene. fortunately, we were able to stay four of the seven planned days prior to being evacuated. what this resort has going for it: beautiful location on the best section of beach on one of the best beaches in the US, and a wonderful staff that would go to great lengths to smile, say hello, and ensure all was well with our stay (pre-hurricane, of course). what this resort is lacking: the room was pretty dated, and the hotel itself is showing it's age...if you're looking for something luxurious,
