We stayed at the Beach section of the resort, overall there are 4 Barcelo resorts in the area. The beach was beautiful and the resort is excellent. Large number of activities including jet ski rental, which we really enjoyed. At other resorts we stayed at (like the Occidental) we had to purchase the packages and take a bus for this activity. The only drawback was the food - not too great at this resort. Even got food poisoning once but not sure where we got it, may have been at Excaret eco park. No snacks after 12pm unless you pay for room service. Crappy internet service if that is important to you. The 'palace' hotel in this resort is best, with better food and much better restaurants, but is also most expensive. The place section is also filled with snotty guests if you can stomach it. A really good family resort, food problems not withstanding, would recommend it. The exceptional beach front and swimming pools is among the best in the Riviera.

We stayed at the XpuHa palace in the middle of April and had pretty modest expectations of this place as it was flattened by a hurricane three years ago. We have been to Thailand a couple of times and love open air kind of hotels that are close to nature but still delivers high class service. This resort is not the usual all- inclusive-same-old-buffet kind of place but a more personal, less crowded resort with staff that take the extra effort to remember your name. This resort has an animal refugee programme that tries to help animals that cannot be repatriated to the wild, making the resort in part look like a smaller zoo. Our daughter loved that part ( and the complimentary bike ofcourse). We only stayed a week but could easily been there longer. Superb service and attentative staff! Tip

My husband and I go to a different resort in the Riviera Maya every summer, and we always choose an all adult resort. We are beach people, so the quality of the beach is high on our list in helping us select a resort. We had hoped to stay at the Secrets Maroma resort since we had seen it being built when we we stayed at the Catalonia Maroma resort next door, but it was far too expensive. The Maroma Beach is truly beautiful, and it is hard to find any other beach that can compare. But based on the reviews I read about the beach at the Catalonia Royal Tulum and the affordable cost, we decided to spend 7 nights there in July. We were very apprehensive since we knew the hotel was not luxurious like the Royal Playa Del Carmen or the El Dorado Royale we had stayed in,and we knew we could have stayed at the new Valentin Mayan Resort for the same cost, but we were just hoping to find a beautiful beach. So we were pleasantly surprised when we found the Catalonia Royal Tulum to be our little piece of paradise! The beach was amazingly beautiful with powdery sand and no rocks in the water. Although our room was simple and outdated, the overall resort was gorgeous with unique features such as the Tapas Lounge, juice bar, and the "chill-out" beach bed area. The fitness center was great, and we both had great massages at a local spot next to the resort. The restaurants were typical of other resorts, but service was slow since it was 90% full. Still, overall, it was paradise!

The only disappointing piece of our vacation was that I only booked it for three days. Three days isn't quite enough time to enjoy everything. The other positive reviews on the Barcelo are spot on the money: it is clean, it is beautiful, the resort has appeal to all ages and I felt safe. I had packed an arsenal of stomach medicine "just in case" and thankfully no one got sick. Here are just a few items that I would like to pass along to anyone planning to go : *the line at Customs at the airport was horrendous : 2 hours to get from the back of the line to the front of the line. Everyone in line was about to lose their minds. It really sets your trip off in a bad way. Then it takes Best Day travel another hour (standing in the heat) to get the shuttles organized and on their way. *the resort is a good 1 and 1/2 hr ride outside of Cancun. I should have booked a private shuttle to the resort and skipped all of the other stops to nearby resorts. **too strict on the "dress code" for the nice rest. It was our 17th wedding anniversary and we made reservations to the Italian rest. (b/c the steak place is booked solid each night) and my husband was refused service and the lady was rude. Its too hot for long pants...they offered no alternative. So, it was back to the same chicken nuggets and fries buffet. *go to 5th avenue if you want an authentic shopping experience - go in the daylight *the resort doesn't take CASH? *pack pool toys and rafts

The place was amazing and the staff was very pleasant. We are going to try and return in a year or two. The staff was very attentive, friendly, very helpful. The resort was very clean, and the grounds were beautiful. I would highly suggest this resort to anyone. Pros: Very large resort with plenty of activities for people of all ages Several large beautiful pools all over the resort Several buffets to choose from/ many restaurant choices Shops on site (carry many items Gifts/healthcare/tequila/etc) Many options for off site excursions Cons: Like anywhere the check in process was very slow (we expected this and it wasnt as bad as we had anticipated) Sometimes the food at the buffet was stale (or has been out for too long) If you are looking for a beach resort , this resort has a beach, but is consumed mainly by a reef. So it tends to be rocky Dinner reservations are a difficult, and the system for making reservations is faulty. The palace hotels is a bit far from the lobby and the last stop on all the trams Tips: Make your dinner reservations right away when you get there Make sure you have a bathing suit in your carry on because they are a little slow to bring bags to the room You can enjoy the resort while you wait for your room mini bar is free and restocked daily bring lots of sun screen and bug spray Bring small bills for tips (drivers, dinner, off site tips) you need to make your dinner reservations with the concierge in the front lobby
