I just came back from Barcelo Maya Resort and it is a beautiful property. The Pool is huge and really nice aswell the beach, however the service and the food is terrible. No body aknowledge you or greet you. You have to say Hello first instead that a server/waitress say hello or good morning etc. They have no idea what costumer satisfaction means. The food is terrible, all the drinks are waterdown even sodas, disgusting!!! another bad thing is that the pillows and the bed are very hard, so unless you like to sleep in a hard bed you have to request in advance a good pillow. BTW i love Mexican food but this hotel barely have any and its in Mexico???

We only stayed here one night while we were waiting to get into another resort. They knew we had 2 adults and 2 kids, yet we got a room with one king sized bed! They had no other rooms, but they did bring in two cots. That made for a tight squeeze. The room was also quite damp and musty smelling. But otherwise the resort was quite unique and nice, but lots of walking. We used the bikes as much as possible, but many of them were broken or too big for our kids (we have big kids who are 9 and 11, but the size of 12 and 13 year olds). The pools and beach were beautiful! LOVED the protected inlet for snorkeling. Enjoyed the "jungle feel" of the place with lots of animals and open-air places.

The Room - Nice. Marble. Comfortable bed. Big Shower. Not a very good TV. Nothing much to see or reason to go out on balcony. Free room-service. Only saw 1 bug all week. The Resort - Nice. Very clean. Surrounded by jungle. The walk is not terrible, but enough to make you say "nah, I don't really need to go to the lobby." Beautiful beach! The Staff- Friendly and helpful. Some more than others. Some speak better English than others as well. The Food-Not great. Some of the soups, chicken, and lamb chops were good. The deserts and pastries were excellent. Just tell them what and how much you want to drink. The airfare was high, but the resort is a good value and has a beautiful beach and I can still recommend it. Just cross your fingers that you have good weather and don't lose your AC!

The only disappointing piece of our vacation was that I only booked it for three days. Three days isn't quite enough time to enjoy everything. The other positive reviews on the Barcelo are spot on the money: it is clean, it is beautiful, the resort has appeal to all ages and I felt safe. I had packed an arsenal of stomach medicine "just in case" and thankfully no one got sick. Here are just a few items that I would like to pass along to anyone planning to go : *the line at Customs at the airport was horrendous : 2 hours to get from the back of the line to the front of the line. Everyone in line was about to lose their minds. It really sets your trip off in a bad way. Then it takes Best Day travel another hour (standing in the heat) to get the shuttles organized and on their way. *the resort is a good 1 and 1/2 hr ride outside of Cancun. I should have booked a private shuttle to the resort and skipped all of the other stops to nearby resorts. **too strict on the "dress code" for the nice rest. It was our 17th wedding anniversary and we made reservations to the Italian rest. (b/c the steak place is booked solid each night) and my husband was refused service and the lady was rude. Its too hot for long pants...they offered no alternative. So, it was back to the same chicken nuggets and fries buffet. *go to 5th avenue if you want an authentic shopping experience - go in the daylight *the resort doesn't take CASH? *pack pool toys and rafts

The place was amazing and the staff was very pleasant. We are going to try and return in a year or two. The staff was very attentive, friendly, very helpful. The resort was very clean, and the grounds were beautiful. I would highly suggest this resort to anyone. Pros: Very large resort with plenty of activities for people of all ages Several large beautiful pools all over the resort Several buffets to choose from/ many restaurant choices Shops on site (carry many items Gifts/healthcare/tequila/etc) Many options for off site excursions Cons: Like anywhere the check in process was very slow (we expected this and it wasnt as bad as we had anticipated) Sometimes the food at the buffet was stale (or has been out for too long) If you are looking for a beach resort , this resort has a beach, but is consumed mainly by a reef. So it tends to be rocky Dinner reservations are a difficult, and the system for making reservations is faulty. The palace hotels is a bit far from the lobby and the last stop on all the trams Tips: Make your dinner reservations right away when you get there Make sure you have a bathing suit in your carry on because they are a little slow to bring bags to the room You can enjoy the resort while you wait for your room mini bar is free and restocked daily bring lots of sun screen and bug spray Bring small bills for tips (drivers, dinner, off site tips) you need to make your dinner reservations with the concierge in the front lobby
